Uganda Culture and Traditions

Quite a high number of Ugandans are Muslim and most towns have mosques and Muslim schools. You should remove your shoes if planning on entering any Muslim religious sites. Homesexuality is illegal in Uganda. Tipping is now a part of life in Uganda for those working in the hospitality industry, such as porters, waiters, drivers and guides.

Weather in Uganda

Uganda has an equatorial/tropical climate which is tempered by cooling breezes from the mountains. In general terms the lowland area and lake shores enjoy a warm climate, while it is cooler in the highlands. The rains fall mainly between late March to May and October to November. Temperatures average about 26C during days and 16C at night. The hottest months are December to February with temperatures sitting around 30C.

Seasonality

Public holiday periods can become very busy in the parks (such as Queen Elizabeth) when ex-pat workers and wealthier locals take long weekend breaks. These periods are perhaps best avoided if seeking peace and quiet and fewer vehicles on the game drive circuits. Also during the heavier rains of March to May murram roads can become blocked with trucks bogged from sliding on very slippery road surfaces. This can increase travelling time considerably. Conditions underfoot whilst gorilla trekking are also more difficult during this peiod, with slippery (and often steep) jungle trails.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

To get the most out of your next adventure it makes sense to consider some of the very local factors that combine to make up what you feel is the best time to travel to a destination. Many of these factors are very personal – some people prefer to travel when the weather is not too hot, or sites too crowded – others prefer to travel when a traditional local event is taking place. Taking into account the dates of public holidays can also make sense as these may have an impact on opening times of attractions, shops and restaurants, or might affect public transport or other services. Conversely public holidays can be a time of great local festivities and celebrations providing a feast of local expressionism and culture.

Money Advice for Uganda

Local Currency

Uganda Shilling (UGX)

General Advice

Dollars cash is the most welcome foreign currency. Paying with Dollars can also lead to some frustration as notes dated prior to 1990 are turned away. Also, strangely, notes smaller than US$50 attract a far lower exchange rate, especially outside of Kampala.

Money Exchange

Cash can be exchanged in banks in all major towns, though you may need to be prepared to queue. In the larger towns, there are Foreign Exchange shops which tend to be faster than banks.

ATM Availability

ATMs are becoming more widely available in major Ugandan towns and Kampala. However in Africa, they are subject to breakdowns and should not be totally relied upon. Barclays Bank offers cash advances against Visa cards, as does Standard Chartered through its network of ATMs. For more information check theVisa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are not widely accepted and can only be used in major hotels, airlines, and other international businesses – always check in advance. Hefty surcharges are common. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.

Other Information

Fraud involving credit cards, traveller’s cheques and wire transfers is common in Uganda, ensure you remain vigilant at all times. Foreign debit and charge cards cannot be used.
