Travel to Georgetown (Ascension) – The Capital of Ascension Island
Georgetown is the capital of Ascension Island and is located on the West coast of the island. It is centered around St Mary’s Church but has few main attractions and amenities. However for fantastic views of the compact city head to the top of Cross Hill.
Georgetown and Ascension Island were discovered in 1501 by Juan da Nova Castella who also discovered St. Helena. It was rediscovered in 1503 by Alfonso d’Alberquerque on Ascension Day.
Visit St Mary’s Church, Cross Hill with its fort, Victorian cannons and world war one guns or the museum.
There is an athletics track in the town that you can make use of or why not climb Cross Hill where you will be rewarded with outstanding views across Georgetown.
Relax in Georgetown at the pier and port or by taking in the spectacular views across the city from Cross Hill.
There is no public transport but you can hire a car or join an organised tour. Otherwise you can get around by foot or bike.
