Travel to Awasa – Small Fishing Town

Awasa lies on the shores of Lake Awasa in the Great Rift Valley and its important local attractions include the St. Gabriel church and the Awassa Kenema Stadium.

Awasa ,also spelled Awassa, is located on the shores of Lake Awasa in the Great Rift Valley in the Sidama Zone. Awasa was capital of the former Sidamo Province until the province was abolished with the adoption of the 1995 Constitution. Fishing is the major local industry in Awasa.

Awasa’s main attractions are the imposing St. Gabriel church and the Awassa Kenema Stadium. However, you can also visit a early morning fish market where you can sample the fresh fish.

Bird watching is a popular activity here and you can take the 3.4km Shoreline Trail around the lake for the best viewing opportunities. Birds that you may see include eagles amongst others. You can also rent boats at Lake Awasa in order to spot hippos.
