Travel to Senkelle Sanctuary – Home to Swayne’s Hartebeest
Senkelle Swayne’s Hartebeest Sanctuary is a protected area in the Oromia Region (or kilil) of Ethiopia, dedicated especially to the protection of the Swayne’s Hartebeest.
The sanctuary was etablished in 1974 and is located in the Mirab Shewa Zone at Senkelle, 5 kilometres from Ambo. The main factors threatening the species with extinction were political unrest in the area, indiscriminate poaching and increased pressure on its restricted habitat.
