Travel to Northern Sudan – River Nile & Ancient Nubia
Two states comprise the north of Sudan – Northern and River Nile. Dongola is capital of Northern state, with the town of Wadi Haifa, a headquarters of the British in the late nineteenth century, located in the far north close to the Egyptian border.
Ed Damer is capital of River Nile state, with the Royal City of Meroe – one of Sudan’s most important sites – located further south.
The fascinating region of northern Sudan is readily accessible by chartered 4WD with driver/guide. It is reasonably developed for experienced travellers (compared to most of the rest of the country) and culturally rich in Sudanese archaeological sites, desert wilderness, relaxed Nubian towns and the bustle of northern Sudanese daily life.
