Travel to Nosy Be – The Scented Island
Just an hours flight from Tana is Nosy Be, a beautiful and fertile island, a haven of sunshine. Covering an area of about 300 square kilometres, Nosy Be, meaning the big island, is located just off the northwest coast of Madagascar in the Diana region and the Antsiranana Province.
Thanks to its calm and nice atmosphere, warm sea, underwater marvels, beautiful beaches, and scenic views, Nosy Be is a paradise destination for people seeking sunbathing and relaxing in a magic environment.
The island was called Assada during the early colonial era of the 17th century, and has been given several nicknames over the centuries. The most relevant of those nicknames may be “Nosy Manitra,” which means the scented island.
The first inhabitants of the island, before the arrival of the Sakalava, who represent the most numerous ethnic group on the island, belonged to small bands of Antankarana and Zafinofotsy. These people were joined later by some Comorians, Indians or Antandroy.
The Oceanographic Museum, the CNRO (Centre National de la Recherche Océanographique), Lokobe Reserve, Mont Passot, Mount Lokone, and nearby islands of Nosy Komba, Nosy Mitsio, Nosy Sakatia, and Nosy Tanikely are popular attractions while in Nosy Be.
Excursions to nearby islands and sugar plantations can be arranged locally.
