Travel to Ambalavao – Papermaking Centre
Ambalavao is a city located in the Haute Matsiatra region. It is in the most southern part of the central highlands, near the city of Fianarantsoa.
Ambalavao is mostly known for its beautiful colonial architecture and papermaking. The paper is made from the pulp of the avoha tree and was first produced by Muslim inhabitants to write passages from the Koran on.
Visit the Ataimoro paper factory where paper used for greeting cards, portfolios, photo albums and lampshades is made. The centre of the city is also worth a visit. You can also wander through the market and admire the beautiful colonial architecture.
Enjoy riding out to the Anja Reserve, about 13 kilometres outside the town.
