Travel to Bird Island – Remote and Private Island
Bird Island is the northernmost island in the Seychelles and it is renowned for its abundant and diverse birdlife, especially during the breeding season of April to October. This remote and private island occupies 70 hectares and is just a 30 minute flight from the main island of Mahé, making it an accessible and exciting wilderness excursion away from the main islands.
Historically Bird Island was known as Ile aux Vaches due to the numerous dugongs that lived in the nearby waters. The island was also once a coconut plantation and cash crops such as papaya and cotton were also grown there. In 1967 the island became privately owned.
Bird Island is naturally known for its birdlife and species that you may spot include sooty terns, fairy terns and common noddies. During the month of May millions of birds come to nest here and it is quite a spectacular sight to see. However, also on the island you can see green and hawksbill turtles.
Bird Island is a superb bird watching destination due to its abundance of diverse bird types. However, it is also popular with people looking to enjoy game fishing.
