Travel to Ghariyan – City with Underground Caves
The modern town of Ghariyan is usually visited as an overnight stop on a cultural tour of Libya. The town is famous for its traditional troglodyte dwellings typical of the region – cave houses.
The houses are accessed by descending passageways which have been tunnelled out of the earth and lead to large circular pits. Caves or ‘rooms’ have been hewn from the rock and surround communal pits.
One of the caves contains a small museum containing everyday items dating back over 100 years.
