15 km or 20 minutes drive south from Nouadhibou is Cap Blanc, Mauritania’s answer to the Cape of Good Hope. Here there is a lighthouse and wide beach (accessed down a sandy slope, with a rope chain for those that need support).
The most dramatic view of Cape Blanc is the first view of a rusting ship beached below the lighthouse, lapped by shifting sand. Used by locals as an unusual picnic spot, the shady side of the vessel provides a cooler place out of the sun. Look out for dolphins snatching remains of fish left by fishermen in the shallow waters.
A small population of about 150 monk seals Monachus monachus is found at Cap Blanc.
