Karaouiyine Mosque

Karaouiyine Mosque was founded by Fatima El Fihriya in 857, the mosque has been extended and enriched by successive sultans to become one of the most important mosques and universities in Islam. Organised into parallel naves on each side of a principal nave with a stalactite dome cupola, the building is impressive: it can contain up to 20,000 people.

The mosque became a centre of teaching under the reign of Abou Inan, when a library, which now comprises 30,000 books, and an observatory were added. A place of worship, it is not open to non-Muslims but a walk around the building is a pleasure for the eyes.
