Souks of Marrakech

The souks of Marrakesh are a sight in themselves. Located directly north of Djemaa el Fna, a maze of winding, covered and pedestrian streets literally overflow with shops selling every item imaginable – much of it great quality, local and hand-made. The souks are divided into areas by goods, with craftsmen often seen at work making quite intricate items. The main street is called Rue Souk Smarine, which runs north from the square. Popular purchases are Ali Baba-style slippers (known as babouche), carpets, rugs, metalwork, spices, leather goods and colourful pottery.
