Sidi Abderrahmane

The discovery of this fossil hominian (cousin of the pithecanthropus of Java) caused an outburst of joy among archeologists in1955! The excavations of this quarry south of Casablanca started in 1941 under the supervision of Neuville and Ruhlman.

Successively, they discovered several cavities (bear cave, rhinoceros cave, elephant cave…) and an enormous quantity of carved stone tools characteristic of the Acheulean period, associated with a variety of fossilised animals.
