Gates of Essaouira
In a fortified town, the gates are of great importance. Some of the gates to the town are in the classic Moroccan style. Bab Doukkala (north), Bab Marrakesh (east) and Bab Sbaa (south) have a resolutely Arabic architecture. Salient to the rampart, their arched openings have a characteristic style.
Contrasting with the typically Moroccan gates, others were built based on a European model. The port gate (Bab El Marsa), built in the eighteenth century, is crowned by a triangular pediment, supported by grooved columns in a Greek style. These edifices are one of the many vestiges of European influence in Essaouira over the centuries.
