Chellah Necropolis

Storks on the Chellah Rabat

Undeniably, the most romantic site of Rabat! It consists of thousands of Merinid tombs surrounded and submerged by vegetation. In the spring, thousands of flowers embalm the air and make a visit to the necropolis as refreshing as it is informative. Pleasure for the eyes is doubled by pleasure for the ears as the necropolis is also a nesting place for storks and oxpeckers that make a characteristic noise with their beaks.

A fountain irrigates the garden with its clear water and joyful sound. The place was often used as shelter and inspiration to saints and mystics, including the marabouts with their distinctive cupolas found throughout the garden. One of the fountains, filled with eels, is said to relieve the anxiety of sterile women.
