Dar Soltane Prehistoric Site
The area south of Rabat was, from the higher palaeolithic period, inhabited by man. Evidence of this is found in two caves at Dar es Soltane which revealed a great discovery in 1975: part of a skull of an adult aged around 50. It is the rare evidence of Aterian civilisation, a civilisation based in north Africa (40,000 to 20,000 ago). The cave has maintained traces of meals of these Aterians: at the time the Atlantic coast was home to hippopotami, rhinoceroses, antelopes, reptiles, etc. Shell fish and fish were also on the menu of humans living on the Atlantic coast.
