Ribat of Monastir
The Ribat of Monastir is both a religious and a military monument built between the end of the 8th century and the 10th century. The Ribat is the oldest and most important of its kind in the Maghreb. The original construction, covering 1300 square metres, was enlarged a century later to 2200 square metres and had its area doubled by the 11th century when it was transformed into a vast citadel, which is one of the largest military constructions of Islamic Tunisia.
In 1770, it was transformed by the French into a Kasbah and became an almost impregnable fortress. Great views can be had from its watchtower over the town of Monastir.
