Travel to Mt. Thabana Ntlenyana – Southern Africa’s Highest Peak
Thabana Ntlenyana, which literally means “Beautiful little black mountain” in Sesotho, is the highest point in Lesotho and the highest mountain in southern Africa at a height of 3482m. It is situated on the ridge of the Drakensberg mountains near Sani Pass.
It was here in the Maluti Mountains that the Basotho fled from the Zulu King Shaka in the 19th century. The Maluti Mountains became their fortress and protection.
As well as the highest peak in Southern Africa, Thabana Ntlenyana at 3482m, visitors can see spectacular mountain views. You can also spot a variety of birds and see the local Basotho people. For the ultimate experience spend a night in a Basotho village where you’ll here traditional cultural songs and learn about their culture and traditions.
Activities are in abundance here and in the surrounding Maluti Mountains for those seeking exhilirating adventures. These include; pony trekking on native Basotho ponies, mountain climbing, mountaing biking, 4×4 trails, hang-gliding and para-gliding. Also during May, June and July it is possible to try your hand at skiing.
You can get around Mt. Thabana Ntlenyana and the surrounding Maluti Mountains on foot, skis, horseback or by four wheel drive vehicle.
