Nkhotakota Game Reserve

Elephants by the river in Nkhotakota Game Reserve

Travel to Nkhotakota Game Reserve – Prolific Birdlife

Nkhotakota Game Reserve is a national game reserve in Malawi. It is situated on top of the Rift Valley escarpment above the lake and is the oldest established reserve in Malawi. The Bua River cuts through the middle on route to the lake. A new luxury lodge has been built in the Reserve, Tongole Lodge offers bush walks, game drives, canoes and fishing.

There are no open plains so game viewing can be difficult, but elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, several antelope species and hyena can all be found in the area.

Visitors can go fishing for mpasa and Lake Salmon. Or you can go bird watching as there are 300 species that have been recorded, including Pel’s Fishing Owl and Palmnut Vulture.

Relax at the campsite at Bua for the ultimate wilderness bush experience. Or enjoy first class service at the newly built Tongole Lodge.

To visit Nkhotakota it is best to travel by organised four wheel drive, signposts in the park are minimal.  Once in the park you can participate in a walking safari along the river or up into the mountains accompanied by rangers from the lodge.

  • Stay in luxury at Tongole lodge or camp at Bua for a more wild experience.
  • Spot around 300 bird species.
  • Home to a diverse range wildlife from elephants to elusive lions.
