Travel to Cape Maclear – Beautiful Beaches for the Ultimate in Relaxation

Cape Maclear, also called Chembe, is a small fishing village on Lake Nyasa. Here you can explore beautiful beaches for the ultimate in relaxation or participate in water sports for a more adventurous trip.

Cape Maclear is a fishing village of about 10,000. The fishermen live in the center of the town, while either end of the village caters to tourists. Cape Maclear was named by David and Charles Livingstone, who visited it in 1861 and named it after Sir Thomas Maclear, then Astronomer Royal at the Cape of Good Hope.

Cape Maclear has a beautiful beach to see as well as the missionary graves on the north end of town. There are few tourist attractions as most visitors come here simply to relax and unwind.

There is plenty to do here from sunbathing and swimming at the beaches to diving with otters and kayaking to nearby islands. There is also scuba diving, sunset cruises and hiking. One hike is the 80 minute trail which starts near the Missionary Graves and takes you up to a viewing point above the village. There are also less well marked trails which you can hire a guide to take you along.

  • Relax on gorgeous sandy beaches.
  • Scuba dive, kayak and hike.
  • Visit local bars and restaurants in the town.
