Travel to Zuurberg Mountains – Unrivalled Eastern Cape Views
The Zuurberg Mountains are located near the Addo Elephant National Park and overlooks the hills of the Eastern Cape as well as the heart of the valley with its bushveld and fynbos plant species that are unique to the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.
Late Stone Age archaeological sites lie within the mountains and artifacts have been found that date back approximately 15,000 years.
The main attraction here is the spectacular natural beauty of the mountains and valleys as well as the nearby Addo Elephant National Park. The obvious main attraction of the Addo Elephant National Park is the park’s 450 African Elephants which have a special, brownish skin colour as a result of the red soil. However, also in the park there are black rhinos, lions, leopards, cape buffalo, whales, dung beetles, antelope, great white sharks and a vast number of bird species. One of the main appeals of the park is that it is less crowded than other South African national parks and so visitors can look around at their leisure and enjoy the peaceful and undeniably beautiful surroundings.
You can hike in the mountains and enjoy the unrivalled views of the Eastern Cape or head to the Addo Elephant National Park where you can participate in game drives, bird watching and horse riding. However, if you head further afield you can also visit Mountain Zebra National Park to see rare mountain zebra, the old town of Graaff-Reinet, Port Elizabeth and the garden route and also the Karoo.
Simply soak up the atmosphere and the sights, sounds and smells of the mountains or relax at the park’s onsite restaurant and shop or for the ultimate wilderness adventure opt to camp in the park at one of the two camps that are located near the village of Addo and at the Colchester entrance.
Get around the mountains on foot or in the park your best option is to hire a car which can be done at Port Elizabeth or join an organised tour. There are no public transport options in the park.
