Travel to Piggs Peak – Small Town Founded on Gold Mining
Piggs Peak is a town in north western Swaziland. It was founded around gold prospecting in 1884, but its main industry is now forestry. The northern town of Pigg’s Peak is named after William Pigg who discovered a gold reef nearby.
A major hotel in the area is the Orion Pigg’s Peak along the main route between the Kruger National Park in South Africa and Mbabane. This hotel incorporates shops, restaurants and a casino and is a popular overnight venue for tourists entering Swaziland from the Kruger National Park, as well as an ideal conference venue.
There are also the Peak Fine Craft Centre where there are diverse and interesting shops; a workshop where visitors may watch the process from spinning the mohair yarn to completion of the various items; a restaurant with spectacular views over the area and Phophonyane Falls Lodge and Nature Reserve.
