Tanji River Bird Reserve
The Tanji River Bird Reserve can be found on Gambias coast approximately 10km south of the main coastal resorts. The Reserve includes a variety of habitats: mangrove, woodland, lagoons and Bijol Islands offshore, this variety attracts a wide selection of birds with more than 300 species recorded in the park.
Bijol Island is an important breeding ground for green turtles, the Caspian tern and grey-headed gulls. Boats to the islands are operated by the wildlife department only outside of breeding season to minimise disturbance and help to keep the fragile environment safe.
