Zambian Kwacha (ZMK)

General Advice

It’s best to come into the country with a combination of cash and travellers cheques in US dollars or British pounds which can be exchanged in main towns.

Money Exchange

US dollars, UK pounds, Euro or South African Rand can be exchanged in banks in all major towns or foreign exchange bureau.

ATM Availability

Credit Cards

Credit cards are not widely accepted outside large towns or tourists areas – always check in advance. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.

Other Information

The Zambian currency fluctuates quite regularly. Most used note denominations are K500 and K1000, K5000 and K10000. Nobody uses Ngwee coins any more as they are worthless. If you are offered an exchange on the black market at the borders, excercise extreme caution as the dealers are notorious for cheating you without you even realising it.
